Summer Camp Session 3: The Backyardigans

The Backyardigans is an animated musical-adventure series featuring five friends who use their imaginations to embark on epic journeys. This session, we will be covering several episodes that provide a variety of fun activities and games to reinforce vocabulary and concepts related to different themes. The most important ingredient will be allowing the children to have a great time using their imagination.  After all, “they’ve got to the whole wide world to explore”, or at least our backyard playground.

Each day, one of the Backyardigans will be featured:

Monday- Uniqua (pink)  Find things that begin with the letter P, based on the episode of Chichen Itza Pizza.

Tuesday- Tasha (yellow)

Catch a Fish with Tasha: a magnet fishing station will be set up so the students can catch fish like Tasha would. Also, Jump over the Gobbly Goo from the episode The Tower of Power. In art, we’ll create the goo using cornstarch, water, and green food coloring.

Wednesday- Tyronne (orange)

Jump from Stone to Stone over the river from the episode The Heart of the Jungle by placing garden stones over streams of blue streamers that students must jump from one to the next without falling in.

Thursday- Pablo (blue)

Follow Pablo: A selected helper will wear a bow tie or propeller hat and will come up with various moves that the kids follow.

Friday- Austin (purple)

A selected helper will be Austin, as he leads a dance contest- based on the episode “Surfs Up”, where Uniqua, Pablo, and Tyrone need to learn rad moves before Austin allows them to surf Tiki beach.

Games and activities taken from the Backyardigans episodes for in this session include: Super Spy, The Volcano Sisters and High Adventures, among others.

In the final week of this session, for the older kids, we will be holding a scavenger hunt outside based on the Key to the Nile episode. The first present is the Jewel of the Waters. The second present is the Yellow Lotus Flower. The third is a Drink of Water from the Secret Oasis. When the teams find all three items, we will reveal the Secret of the Nile: the magic words “please” and “thank you.”

The toddlers will take part in a recreation of “Pirate Treasure” with a treasure hunt. Pablo, Uniqua, Tyrone and Austin find buried treasure, walk the plank and find the X.

An obstacle course race like the “Race Around The World” episode is sure to be a blast for everybody, too.
