Under the Sea!

Tiny turtles took a dive into water world with our new topic, “Under the Sea.” They are learning all about sea animals.

We changed our bulletin board to portray sea life and some of the animals that we may find in the ocean. The kids are very excited with this topic!

This week, they learned about fish, sharks, whales, dolphins, octopus, jellyfish, crab, lobster, mermaid, starfish and seahorse.

We also had two super kids. We celebrated Tico’s and Nico’s birthday! They both turned 2. Their parents brought some cupcakes to share with their friends. (Thank you!) Mr. Mike made a super special birthday crown for them!

Exploration time was such a great experience for the kids! They we’re pleased and surprised with the activities we made. For example, free play with inflatable fish, sensory boxes with kinetic sand and plastic sea animals, and playing with puzzles.

During creativity time, the Tiny Turtles made some handprints to make a crab. They really enjoyed using paint. They also made some celery stamps simulating fish scales, using different techniques to develop their sensory skills. The Kiddos started a jellyfish project using a paper plate. They used different color paints and brushes and they loved it!!

The Turtles love to dance to videos about the vocabulary words they’re learning, This week, we showed them: “Baby Shark”, “Baby Beluga” and the  “Crab dance.” This is great for the little ones because they get to name and identify the sea animals they’re learning about.

In the jungle…

We just finished the last week of jungle animals!  Tiny turtles learned about the crocodile, monkey, bear and rhinoceros. They enjoyed this theme a lot, always imitating the animal sounds, and loving the books that had pictures of them.

In exploration time, the kids had fun with a sensory box that had different kinds of pasta and plastic jungle animals. The Tiny Turtles were happy to play with our jungle plush animals and with the “tower of zoo” toy with a ball.

In creativity time, they finished their “Jungle” project, kids pasted the “estopa” and pasta for the trees. They had a blast making a zebra, giraffe, lion, monkey and tiger using different techniques and materials. They loved the experience!  They also started making a bear with fork prints. They liked working with different textures and materials.

We want to thank you all for the kind appreciation we felt on Teacher’s Day! We feel fortunate to be involved in your child’s education and blessed for the amazing opportunity of growing and learning together every day. We love being teachers and we want to thank you for trusting us with the most important and valuable treasure of all: Your kids!

It was superkid Loreto’s birthday on Thursday! Her Mommy and Daddy brought some doughnuts to share with her friends. (Thank you!) Mr. Mike made a super special birthday crown for Loreto, and her dad carried her to take her on a magic rocket ride! What a fun day!

We’re Going to the Zoo!

We continued this week with jungle animals, the main topic of the month. We also talked about zebras, snakes, tigers, rhinos and kangaroos. The Tiny Turtles were very excited to learn more about these animals,

The kids had a lot of fun in exploration time, playing with plush zoo animals and puzzles. They also had lots of fun painting some pasta with green paint so they could use it for their jungle project and painted some “estopa” with green food coloring. The turtles really enjoy working with different textures.

During creativity, we continued working on our “Jungle” using different materials to create some of the animals we’re learning so much about. Next week we are going to hand it out so the kids can take it home.

In physical development, we are rehearsing for our end of year program, The kiddos are all into it and really enjoying it. We are sure you’re going to love it!

On Friday, we celebrated Maria’s Birthday!  She is going to turn 2 in July, so we had an early celebration. Her Mommy and Daddy had a “Frozen” and a “Gallinita Pintadita” show the kids enjoyed a lot! They also brought some flautas and cupcakes to share with all the kids at kinder (Thank you!) And Mr. Mike made a super special birthday crown for Maria, and he carried her on a magic rocket ride!

What a fun day! Everybody have so much fun!

Going to the Zoo!

Big Bears had fun learning about jungle and zoo animals; how each one has something special! Knowing that even though they all live in the same environment their habitats and characteristics are different.

During creativity they have been enjoying making a jungle collage using different techniques and materials.

In Mr. Mike´s Circle time, Big Bears were very enthusiastic about role playing different situations like wearing masks or pretending being in the jungle imitating different sounds and movements.

We have been practicing for Trolls, our end of the year program. Big Bears are really excited singing and dancing to the songs.

In the Jungle, the Mighty Jungle

We are now in the month of May! Zoo and water animals are the main topics of the month, and this first week we talked about the jungle, monkeys, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and lions. The Tiny turtles are leaning more about these animals, the sounds that they make, as well as their features.

This week we also celebrated Paulina’s Birthday! She turned 2! Her Mommy and Daddy brought some cupcakes to share with her friends. (Thank you!) And Mr. Mike made a super special birthday crown for Pau, and he carried her up high on a magic rocket ride! What a fun day!

Your little ones had a lot of fun during exploration time, playing with plastic and plush zoo animals. The kiddos enjoyed making animal sounds. They also had lots of fun with the magic grow capsules; They loved watching how the animals grow with the water.

In creativity class we started our “Jungle” using different materials to create the animals we’re learning so much about. Next week the kids will finish it and take it home.

In physical development the kids enjoyed dancing to “The Monkey Dance,” “The Elephant,” and “Just can’t wait to be king.” We are also starting to rehearse for our end of the year program. You’re going to love it!

Wild Animals!

Wild Animals!

This week we started talking about wild animals. We explained to them that we can find them in the jungle or at the zoo. Some of them even mentioned that they have been to a zoo already. Our vocabulary words for this week include jungle, monkey, elephant, giraffe, lion, and zebra. We have been working with plush animals, puppets, toy wild animals, puzzles and posters. Students are now able to identify and talk a little about each one of these animals seen during this week.

During this week in Creativity Class our students have been making several crafts that will be used next week in order to create a poster of different wild animals. They are getting everything ready, using their finger prints, tempra paint, crayons, and markers.

Physical Education class has been really fun, since they have been dancing to the music of these wild animals, such as the Monkey Dance, the Elephant Song, Animal Action Song, Going to the Zoo, Elephants have Wrinkles, among others. They have loved to act like these animals, imitating their movements. We are also practicing for our Final Festival, which will be in June.

Story Time has been related to this theme as well. Stories read to them are The Jungle Book, In the Jungle, I am a Wild Animal, The Little Elephant, Zoo Animals, My Jungle Pop/up Book, and At the Zoo.

We are happy to mention that we have 3 more students who have proudly achieved to be potty trained! Congratulations!

Toilet Learning: Anticipatory Guidance with a Child-Oriented Approach

Pediatricians are asked frequently about the timing and method for toilet learning. As with many behavioral issues, there are no concrete answers to such questions. Reaching this developmental milestone can be difficult for both the child and parents. To help facilitate the toilet learning process, physicians should inform parents about the ‘child-oriented’ approach before the process starts, and they should be prepared to offer anticipatory guidance to parents as the child learns toileting skills.

The age at which parents initiate a child’s toilet learning and the age at which it is considered appropriate for a child to be toilet trained have changed over the years. The relatively ‘laissez-faire’ approach to toilet learning taken at the beginning of the 1900s was replaced by the the more rigid ‘parent-centered’ approach of the 1920s and 1930s. These approaches were subsequently rejected in favor of the child-oriented approach advocated by Spock and Brazelton, which has become the mainstay of advice provided by physicians. This shift in approach has made it acceptable for children to achieve this developmental milestone at a later age.

Important cultural differences exist between the methods used to toilet train a child. Most children in western countries achieve bladder and bowel control between 24 and 48 months of age. Girls tend to achieve this control at a slightly younger age than boys. The average time from the initiation of toilet learning to the attainment of independent toileting varies from three to six months. The attainment of bladder control does not always coincide with the achievement of bowel control, and night time urinary continence may coincide with daytime continence or occur several months or years later. The toileting process encompasses a great deal of heterogeneity, and there is no specific age at which toilet learning should begin.

Assessing a child’s readiness for toilet learning
Toilet learning readiness should not be dictated by a child’s chronological age. Rather, as the child-oriented approach advocates, a child must be physiologically and psychologically ready to begin the process. Parents should be prepared to devote attention and patience to the task on a daily basis for several months.

For the child, physiological readiness precedes psychological readiness. By the time a child reaches 18 months of age, reflex sphincter control has matured and myelination of extrapyramidal tracts has occurred; both processes are necessary for bowel and bladder control. These processes cannot be accelerated. Psychological maturation, however, is not necessarily achieved in concordance with physiological maturation.

When assessing a child’s readiness for toilet learning, the physician must consider motor, language and social milestones, as well as the child’s demeanor and relationship with his or her parents. A checklist of a child’s toilet learning readiness is in Table 1.

Child-oriented toilet learning techniques
Parental expectations about toilet learning should be assessed by the physician at the child’s first-year visit. This is an opportunity to provide anticipatory guidance because most parents underestimate the time required to complete the process. The child-oriented approach (explained below) should be discussed at subsequent visits, with the physician emphasizing that the age for toilet learning should be flexible. When the child is about 18 months of age, the toilet learning readiness of the child and parents can be assessed, keeping in mind cultural differences. Parents and all caregivers should be ready to initiate toilet learning by ensuring that time is set aside for the process and that the arrangements are suitable for the entire family. The toilet learning process should not be initiated at a stressful time in the child’s life (eg, after a move or after the birth of a new sibling), and parents should be prepared emotionally for the inevitable accidents that will occur before the process is completed. Parents should be encouraged to follow their child’s cues to progress from one stage to the next, as outlined in Table 2. Further visits to the doctor can be used to assess progress while providing a forum to discuss issues that may arise.

• Able to walk to the potty chair (or adapted toilet seat)
• Stable while sitting on the potty (or adapted toilet seat)
• Able to remain dry for several hours
• Receptive language skills allow the child to follow simple (one- and two-step) commands
• Expressive language skills permit the child to communicate the need to use the potty (or adapted toilet seat) with words or reproducible gestures
• Desire to please based on positive relationship with caregivers
• Desire for independence, and control of bladder and bowel function

A potty chair is recommended rather than a toilet during the early stages because children feel more secure and stable on the potty. The potty also provides the best biomechanical position for the child.

Initially, the child is encouraged to sit fully dressed on the potty. Next, the toddler is encouraged to sit on the potty after a wet or soiled diaper has been removed. It may be helpful to place the soiled diaper in the potty to demonstrate its function. At a later date, the child can be led to the potty several times a day and encouraged to sit on it for a few minutes without wearing a diaper. Finally, the child is encouraged to develop a routine of sitting on the potty at specific times in the day (eg, after waking in the morning, after meals or snacks, and before naps and bedtime). Using this method, the child may gain control of bladder and bowel function in a few weeks.

Decide on the vocabulary to use. Ensure the potty chair and position are easily accessible. Allow the child to watch his or her parents use the toilet.
If a regular toilet is used, use a toilet seat adapter and a foot stool.
Encourage the child to tell a parent when he or she needs to void. Give praise upon success, even if the child tells the parent after the fact. Learn the child’s behavioral cues when he or she is about to void.
Encourage the child with praise. Do not expect immediate results; expect accidents. Avoid punishment and/or negative reinforcement.
Ensure the cooperation of all caregivers to provide a consistent approach.
After repeated successes, suggest the use of cotton underwear or training pants. Make this a special moment.
The child needs to be praised whenever he or she expresses an interest in sitting on the potty. Positive reinforcement may be used with this approach, but material rewards should be discouraged. Stickers and charts are in order, yet encouragement and support are more appropriate reinforcement techniques.
Once the child has used the potty successfully for one week or more, he or she may be ready to try training pants or cotton underpants. Accidents are inevitable however, and parents need to be supportive and patient. A child who has experienced a series of accidents soon after trying training pants or cotton underpants should be allowed to return to diapers without shame or punishment.
At times, children may be reluctant to pass stool in a potty or the toilet, particularly if they do not have good support for their feet. At this time, it is imperative that they be allowed to continue having bowel movements in a diaper to prevent the development of constipation and, consequently, painful bowel movements, which will further delay the toilet learning process.

Toileting refusal
Organic causes of failure in toilet learning are not common. The most likely explanation for failure is that the child is not ready. If the child is not ready, parents’ attempts to toilet train him or her will be futile. Parents should be advised not to engage in ‘toileting battles’, which damage the parent-child relationship and the child’s self-image, and may hinder progress in acquiring toileting skills.
If a child expresses toileting refusal, a one- to three-month break from training is suggested. This allows trust and cooperation to be re-established between parent and child. After this break, most children are ready to begin training. However, if repeated attempts are unsuccessful or if the child is older than four years, a referral to a general pediatrician or to a developmental pediatrician may be required. The referral may be necessary to explore aspects of the parent-child relationship and to rule out physical and/or neurodevelopmental abnormalities.
Constipation may complicate toilet learning readiness. A child may associate bowel movements with pain and, therefore, try to avoid the experience as much as possible. Dietary changes are the first step in alleviating this problem, and the use of stool softeners or laxatives may also be considered. A more complete review of the treatment of constipation is beyond the scope of this statement.

Children with special needs
Identifying the best time for toilet learning for the child with special needs is as important as it is for his or her peers. Although the stages of toilet readiness are identical for all children, the demands of the child with special needs require the pediatrician to ascertain the degree to which the child is hampered in toileting (eg, by social and adaptive delays and/or by medications) and when the parents are prepared to begin the toilet learning process. A comprehensive study of this important topic is recommended for physicians involved in the care of children with special needs.

The process of toilet learning has changed significantly over the years and within different cultures. In western culture, a child-centered approach, where the timing and methodology of toilet learning is individualized as much as possible, is recommended.

Pet week!

This week we had a lot to celebrate! We had Maria Emilia’s birthday celebration and also threw the Children’s Day party! Maria Emilia She 2 during the srping break vacation. Her Mommy brought some cupcakes to share with her friends. (Thank you!) Mr. Mike made a super special birthday crown for her, and he carried her to take her on a magic rocket ride!

This week was Pet week and it was so fun! Tiny turtles had a lot of visitors: cats and dogs. They learned about dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, birds, turtles, fish, hamsters and rabbits. We want to thank Cacho’s mom Mrs.Balbina Meyer for bringing her dog “Tisha” to our classroom; the kids were excited and happy to pet her. Also, we want to thank Miss Dany for bringing her dog “Fiona”. We also had “Sparky” (Miss Mely’s dog) visit, as well as “Donato” (Miss Karen’s cat), and “Glen cookie” (Miss Sofy’s dog). During Creativity, the kids got to make a fishbowl using a paper plate, blue paint and goldfish cookies.They really enjoyed using paint and the different textures. They also painted a dog using sponges and brown paint.

In Physical Development, the Tiny Turtles enjoyed playing with balls, throwing them through hoops to songs like, “Who Let The Dogs out” and “Chihuahua.” They also really liked the “Hamster Dance” and “The Goldfish” songs.

They had so much fun with this topic! The kids love animals! They were so excited with the Children’s day party. They loved meeting “Taurus,” the vet’s giant dog, and were surprisingly not afraid of him.

Finally they loved hitting the piñata and also enjoyed having some popsicles to cool off.

Pet Week!

Our Terrific Tigers had a lot of fun this past week talking about pets…..most of them told us that they had a pet at home. They love to talk about animals, and they enjoyed looking at them in pictures, videos and playing with plush animals as well.

This week we began by introducing our four legged friends: dogs, puppies, cats & kittens….. We also taught the Terrific Tigers about fish, birds, turtles, frogs, hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits.

During Creativity Class our kids were busy making turtle and puppy crafts! As well as an awesome bunny mobile!  In Physical Education they have enjoyed rehearsing for their end of the year festival and doing different kinds of exercises with cool music.

Story time has been nice since the books read have been all about pets. Titles such as Playful Puppies, Sam the Dog, I am Lucky the Cat, The 3 Little Kittens, Baby Touch and Feel: Pets, Baby Einstein: Neighborhood Animals, Curious George and the Bunny, The Velveteen Rabbit, and Friendly Pets .

One of the high lights of the week was actually seeing and petting some cute pets. Miss Mely (Tiny Turtles) brought Sparky her dog to school, Miss Dany (Tiny Turtles) brought her puppy Fiona, and Miss Sofi brought Glen Cookie her small dog to school! Miss Karen (Big Bears) brought her pet cat (Donato). Our kids loved to have them in their classroom.

Finally the biggest highlight of the week was celebrating children’s day at the kinder on Friday! The kids got a special visit from a very large dog that a vet was so kind to share with us, enjoyed yummy snacks and treats, danced and played lots of games!!

Next week will begin to talk about Jungle Animals! We will be talking about elephants, giraffes, lions and zebras!

Easter Party!

What a fun week! The Tiny Turtles had a blast during their Easter party and parade, It was full of fun, games, and excitement! We loved seeing our tiny turtle’s faces having a blast and enjoyed going on an egg hunt. Thank you all for attending and making such beautiful cars! We really enjoyed the parade.

During creativity, the kids used some crayons to color an Easter egg and baby chicks. On Tuesday, the kids made some egg stamps with some plastic Easter Eggs, using different colors of paint. Today the  kiddos filled a carrot bag with some marshmallows. They got to take them home. It was really fun!

During Exploration, the kids liked watching some Easter videos and reviewed some of the topics and vocabulary. They played with plush bunnies, Easter eggs and carrots.

Today was our last day of school before our Easter Break! Classes will resume on Monday April 26. We hope you have a super fun time with your little ones! See you in two weeks!
