Fire & Ice + Columbus Day

This week the Tiny Turtles class got very excited experimenting with ice, water and feeling the difference between cold and hot. The kids got to blow out a candle with a cupcake and play with sand. Next week we will be covering the themes witch and cat, halloween, costumes, fall colors, leaves, trees and seasons.

Please label your child’s sweaters and jackets for the winter so it’s easier for us to recognize them.

In our creative department, this week we are going to work with the following:

• Techniques: painting, shaking, touching, jumping, balancing, brushing, pasting and dressing up.

• Media: cookies, chocolate, sprinkles, wooden sticks, glue, paper mache, yarn, leafs, glitter, paint, cardboard, ice cream cones and elastic band.

• Concepts: shake, paste, paint, brush, up and down, fly, turn, jump and balance.

Fall is here!

Dear Parents,

We are having so much fun doing different activities about the weather, the natural elements and of course Halloween!

This week we’ll be working on the seasons and we’ll start talking about our Halloween costumes. We will also have Luciana’s Super Kid day on Thursday, so be ready for a fun-filled week!

Remember we’ll be having the Boo to You Parade at Toddler Tree on Tuesday, October 30th, 2012 at 10:00am, so prepare your children’s costumes! Please consider having your child wear a simple costume for their own comfort. We suggest costumes that will allow kids to move freely, especially for the younger ones, and also using make-up instead of masks that can obstruct their sight and might hinder their participation in the parade.

See you Monday and have a great weekend!

I’m a Witch Ch Ch…

Dear Parents,

The kids love the Halloween theme. Most of them know part of songs and even ask us to play some for them. They especially enjoy “I Am a Witch”, which they often sing and dance. We also went over the concepts hot and cold. One of the activities we made was to melt an ice cube using a hair dryer. They really liked learning about some fundamentals of science.  Christopher Columbus was introduced today and the kids acted out the three ships sailing to the New World. They also liked the song, Andrea said: “pon la cancion de Santa Maria!”.

Next week we will focus on Halloween vocabulary and on guided role-playing.  We will be making a witch hat (based on the popular demand of the Witch song) and we will also go over the concepts of fall.

Have a great weekend!

OCTOBER WEEK 2

Dear Parents,

This week was full of interesting and funny activities! We learned about the different types of lines that exist and the different seasonal temperatures. Big Bears touched water and experimented how it may become ice with freezing temperatures. Also, we used hot air to melt them and have water again. All this week during Creativity, we continued practicing the rhyme of “The Tree” by creating an apple tree using their arms, hands and fingers.

Next week we will discover the different seasons and the main colors of each one. Also, we will start practicing for the Halloween parade by talking about the activities involved during Halloween time.

We encourage you to please talk to your kids about the Boo to You Parade that will be held at Toddler Tree on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at 10:00am. It is important for them to know about their costumes and how their friends will also be using them during this day.

Have a great weekend.

Thank you,

Ms. Caya & Ms. Yayis

Muchas gracias,

Ms. Caya & Ms. Yayis

Shapes! Shapes! Shapes!

Dear Parents,

The kids are always encouraged to become active members of the class. They all enjoyed pointing to figures, putting the number on the calendar, and answering questions from the teachers.  For that reason, Miss Vero and I decided that the Terrific Tigers should make a shape board of their own. We worked all week long in this project using different techniques such as: shaking glitter, using fingers to paint, pasting stickers among others. The kids really enjoyed it! This would be a great project for the kids to keep in their room so they can become even more familiar with shapes. Also, it is always nice to have things they made around them.

Diego Bortoni is a big brother now! Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Navarro on their new baby girl. We read  a couple of books related to becoming a big brother, and we made him a special crown to make him feel happy about his new baby sister.

The Tigers will be enjoying the Halloween theme in the following weeks. We will be talking about using costumes so that they can look forward to parading on the Catwalk we will have on this year’s Boo to You Halloween Parade on October 30th at Toddler Tree.

Next week we will be focusing on lines, hot and cold, and of course Halloween related vocabulary (pumpkins, witches, spiders…).

See you Monday!

OCTOBER WEEK 1

Dear Parents,

This week we had the opportunity to learn about shapes and mixing colors. The Big Bears enjoyed using their creativity to make a car with the use of different shapes. We also practiced our new rhyme “The Tree”, each one takes turns to say it in front of their friends and sometimes they even act while they say it. We love observing how each day they learn new things!

During next week they will discover different type of lines (straight, curved, zig zag, etc) and textures. Big Bears are going to experiment touching water, ice and sand; as well as learning about air and fire. All this new themes will give us the chance to work and play with our Big Bears.

Our Boo to You Halloween Parade will be held on Tuesday October 30th at 10:30 AM at Toddler Tree. Start looking for costumes so your children can enjoy the Catwalk. Try to find simple costumes that will allow kids to move freely (especially for the younger ones) and also using make-up instead of masks that can obstruct their sight and might hinder their participation in the parade.

Have a great weekend. See you Monday!

Muchas gracias,

Ms. Caya & Ms. Yayis

Sticker Rewards

Children and adults behave according to the pleasure principle: behavior that’s rewarding continues, behavior that’s unrewarding ceases. Motivators help to obtain the ultimate goal: self-discipline. Children behave well because they want to or because they know good behavior is expected.

The stickers your child receives at Toddler Tree are rewards for effort and behavior. We are continuing with the strategy of rewarding children with a sticker when one or both of these elements are observed in the classroom. When referring to this concept, please use encouraging words, such as “I know you can win a sticker today” or “Show your best to earn your sticker” so that kids understand they will be rewarded when they deserve it. Please help us by correcting your child if you hear “The teacher didn’t give me a sticker” by reinforcing the concept of earning a reward, instead.
